In news surprising to no one, Straight Outta Compton took the top spot at the box office over the weekend. What is, perhaps, fairly surprising is just how much the film took in over the weekend: $56 million. That means the film just took the fifth biggest August opening of all time. Not bad.
The other big premiere of the weekend, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., took in a very low $13.5 million.
The film, which was a reboot of the 1964-1968 television show directed by Guy Ritchie, had a big budget of $75 million, but ultimately fell short, probably due in part to how long it sat as an undeveloped project for WB. As Box Office Mojo reports, both Tom Cruise and George Clooney were once slated to star in the leading role.
Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation continues to do well, netting an additional $17.3 million.
