Despite a pretty incredible Rotten Tomatoes score, Mad Max: Fury Road was upended over the weekend by Pitch Perfect 2. Mad Max boasted big name stars like Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and Nicholas Hoult, but ultimately, it was no match for the cheeky comedy starring Anna Kendrick, Elizabeth Banks, and Rebel Wilson.
Pitch Perfect 2 ended up taking in over $70 million in its first weekend, but what’s most amazing about this film is its unlikely path to success. The film’s original installment only banked $14.8 million in its opening weekend, and yet, when it hit home video, it earned $65 million and produced a radio single in Kendrick’s “Cups”. The sequel is set to double or triple the first film’s gross income.
Meanwhile, Mad Max: Fury Road is sitting easy after its decent success. The film was troubled from the start — rumors of Hardy’s temper on set abounded, and test screenings went poorly — and yet, the film is being hailed as a would-be classic. It’s possible that this film will see a more permanent, long-winded success, as it seems its initial box office run was a bit misunderstood.
Avengers, as it sits now, is the #1 film of the year. It has grossed $1.14 billion worldwide, and it has yet to open in Japan.
