Life is bizarre, but if you’re Hayward’s Azeem Ward and your Senior Flute Recital is coming up, your life just got straight up unbelievable.
Ward is a music major at the University of California, Santa Barbara preparing to graduate, and with his final show coming up, he did what many students do in his situation: he invited his Facebook friends to the event.
That’s when the magic happened.
All of a sudden, people Ward didn’t know started to RSVP, and when he woke up the following morning, over 4,000 people were attending, and most — oddly enough — were from the UK.
That number grew exponentially, eventually reaching around 20,000+ confirmed to attend. Ward, and obviously, everyone, was baffled. “In the beginning I simply made the event and invited as many friends as I could around here…but for some reason it spread to the UK,” he told British publication The Tab, “But I really appreciate all the support that everyone has been giving.”
And wow is there support.
Ward briefly had a Wikipedia page, and people were selling fake tickets. Even more amazing, at least one fan from the U.K. is attending the recital, and Ward says his own friend is picking him up from the airport.
People have also been mashing up his music, as in this one with Sage the Gemini (lyrics NSFW):
Still, Ward seems to be taking the whole thing in stride, telling The Tab, “It’s really funny because there are only 100 seats in the hall. I would be able to accommodate about 50 more than normal, but not 800.”
And when asked if fans outside the Santa Barbara area would be able to livestream, he responded, “I’ll but sure to post the videos after the recital to show everyone how everything went.”
If you’re curious, here’s what Ward sounds like:
His recital is May 16.
