“I ain’t lettin’ no bear eat my puppies. That ain’t gonna happen.”
Carl Moore, a 73-year-old ex-marine and former boxer from Placer County, is clearly not one to brawl with. Although Moore has made a habit of doing hand strengthening exercises daily and staying in shape, he probably didn’t foresee having to face such a formidable opponent.
Recently, a bear had been visiting Moore’s house and stealing his chickens for a quick meal. It seems annoying enough (and probably a little frightening to us mortals), but it was just that — until the bear got a little too brave. According to Fox4, one day, the animal approached the front deck, causing Moore’s chihuahua to go into panic mode and begin screaming. The other dog on the deck, a 15-year-old lab, is too old to bark loudly (but honestly seemed pretty “meh” about the whole thing anyway).
Moore saw the bear and raised his arms to chase it back down the ramp leading to his house, but apparently, that wasn’t enough. Moore needed to send the bear a real message.
John Sargent, a friend visiting Moore at the time, recounted what happened after.
“Carl just blasted him,” he said. “He whips to the right and hit him with a right…it was crazy.”
As many people know (and most people just assume) you should not engage a bear if you don’t absolutely have to. Then again, if you’ve got the grit and a teeny little pup to protect, well, let’s just hope you end up like Moore here.
“This big right hand has sent a lot of people to the floor,” Moore said. “I never faced anything in my life that I didn’t figure I can whip.”
All we can say is that is one scary dude and one very, very lucky dog.
