An anti-smoking group at University of California San Francisco has a study that shows which actors are the ‘smokiest’ in Hollywood movies. According to their data, some of Hollywood’s biggest names – Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Robert Downey, Jr. – use tobacco products the most on-screen.
Smokefree Movies has made it their mission to get excessive smoking to garner an ‘R’ rating in films. They argue that changing the rating criteria to include tobacco use will help shield younger people from using tobacco.
Since 2002, here are the top 10 ‘smokiest’ actors in all film (Rated G and up):
1 Leonardo DiCaprio – Smoking Score 252
2 J.K. Simmons – Smoking Score 242
3 Vince Vaughn – Smoking Score 215
4 Hugh Jackman – Smoking Score 209
5 Viggo Mortensen – Smoking Score 186
6 Philip Seymour Hoffman – Smoking Score 179
7 Ray Winstone – Smoking Score 175
8 Jude Law – Smoking Score 173
9 Robert Downey, Jr. – Smoking Score 170
10 Jeff Bridges – Smoking Score 157
Actors are listed only if they used a tobacco product (or facsimile) on-screen with their “smoking score” being based on a formula mixing occurrences, number of films, and number of people who saw those films.
Leo may have topped the list just on the amount of smoking he did in the film “The Great Gatsby” which scored as one of the smokiest films since 2002.
