This Photographer Helps Pit Bulls Get Adopted By Dressing Them With Flower Crowns

By Alyssa Pereira

Pit bulls have too long been thought of as dangerous, aggressive animals.

Most of them — like any other dogs —are happy, playful pups, and at least one photographer has made it her mission to show off that lesser-known side of them.

Sophie Gamand, a NYC-based photographer, started a series called “Flower Power, Pit Bulls of the Revolution” where she takes adoptable pit bulls and adorns them with gorgeous flower crowns for local animal shelters.

“I decided to photograph them with flower crowns, to infuse a more feminine energy into their image,” she explains on her site. “I wish for this series to challenge the way we look at pit bulls. All the models from the series are shelter pit bulls who were waiting for adoption at the time of the photograph. Most of them still are.”

One of the big aims of the project is to help change the perception of these breeds.

“I realized pit bulls were always portrayed in very urban, gritty photographs. The imagery associated with these dogs is often harsh, very contrasted, conveying the idea of them being tough,” she says. “‘Flower Power’ is about challenging myself to approach pit bulls with a fresh perspective and an open heart. I invite the viewer to do the same.”

She has been documenting all her subjects on her own Instagram page. See a few of them below.

Meet #PitBullFlowerPower Aphrodite from @nyanimalrescue! She will well named I think, especially since she could pull off such a crown, effortlessly! This is what @nyanimalrescue Write about this gorgeous girl: "Aphrodite is our beautiful 2 year old Pibble mix. This stunning girl was left tied up to a fence with a prong collar embedded into her neck. The collar was so tight that when it was removed, her neck was covered in blood and scabs. Despite her past, Aphrodite is sweet as can be with everyone she meets, including children. She loves to give kisses and is very affectionate. When Aphrodite isn't trying to get some cuddles, she loves to play with toys and enjoys fetching balls. Aphrodite needs some basic training, but she is such a good girl and we know she will thrive in a forever home". #AdoptMeMaybe? . 🌸🌺🐶🌸🌺 This crown was generously sponsored by one of my greatest supporters, Jack! I met miss Molly this week for a #pitbullflowerpower Session! She is one of the most affectionate dog I have ever met. As soon as she arrived, she snuck a kiss on my hand as I opened the door to greet her. Even though Molly has not gotten the best start in life, she is still one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. She was dropped at the shelter and it was clear she had had several litters and no proper care (skinny, patchy fur). She was scared. Slowly though, she warmed up to the volunteers. After a life of neglect (and probably abuse) she finally discovered love and couldn't get enough of it! She ended up on the kill list at the shelter (black pit bulls have it rough) but Hudson valley animal rescue & sanctuary pulled her on time and she has been living at a trainer's house since September (in Nassau County, NY). Molly is starved for affection and rolls over for belly rubs as soon as you look at her. She loves to play… now that she has the opportunity to. Molly is a three year old babydoll who is looking for love, a home and a brand new start. The rescue group is looking for a new foster home or permanent adopters. Thank you so much!!! 💚💚💚 🌺🌸🌺🐶🌺🌸🌺 #pitbullflowerpower #pitbullsoftherevolution #adoptdontshop #adoptionisthehipoption #sophiegamand #blackdog #blackpitbull

After a little #pitbullflowerpower break, I am back with some really cute babies who deserve awesome homes! This is Cash from @brookhaven_animalshelter (Long Island, NY). He is super sweet and playful, he has the most adorable face ever with the cutest underbite. He was found wandering around the parking lot confused and looking for someone to guide him home. Sadly no one in his family has come to get him so at 8 years young he needs a new start. He would love nothing more than to be your best friend and loyal loving companion. He is about 70 pounds of pure love. 🌾🌿🍂🌼🐶🌿🍂🌾🌼 This crown was sponsored by awesome supporter Diego (follow Diego's adventures here: @tuff_sausage). Diego is also a rescue and his parents Sandra and Jason say "He seriously freaking rocks!" Another great spokesdog for all the rescue pits out there 💚💚💚 🌾🌿🍂🌼🐶🌿🍂🌾🌼 #adoptdontshop #pitbullflowerpower #pitbullsoftherevolution #pitbullsofinstagram #brookhavenanimalshelter #mrssizzle #sophiegamand #educationnoteuthanasia
