‘Guardians’ Returns to Box Office Gold; ‘When the Game Stands Tall’ Bombs

By Alyssa Pereira

Guardians of the Galaxy may have backed off the top box office spot for  a couple weeks following the premiere of Ninja Turtles, but that was short-lived. This weekend, the hit summer flick returned to lead the pack, landing it the title of the highest-grossing movie of the summer. It’s on track to earn over $300 million by the end of its theater run.

If I Stay, the drama starring Chloe Grace Moretz, premiered to a strong reception, grossing nearly $16.5 million from a primarily young, female audience. It grossed a chunk more than The Giver‘s premiere did ($12.3 million), though it’s likely it will fall of quickly after opening weekend.

When the Game Stands Tall, the film about the legacy of Concord’s De La Salle High School Football team, grossed poorly overall, but relatively well for a sports film. Critics note it’s on par with similar films Million Dollar Arm and Draft Day, and it’s likely it will take in around $27 million.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For opened to 78% less than what the original Sin City film grossed nine years ago. At the time, the Frank Miller aesthetic was novel, but in the years since, the noir production sheen has since been used in other Miller films, causing Dame to feel a bit overwrought. Dame may not even gross $15 million.

Here’s the full box office (via Box Office Mojo):

1. Guardians of the Galaxy $17,631,000
