Despite initial reports from SFGate and SFist, Elbo Room remains insistent that they are not going anywhere. “We are not in any imminent danger of closing,” they told CBS Radio. “The upstairs and downstairs are the same business…and both will remain open.”
The recent reports stem from a few city planning documents reading, “The proposed project would demolish the existing building,” meaning that if this plan goes through some changes may be afoot, but as these plans include a “mixed-use building including 770 feet of commercial space.” So basically, this could very well just mean that if all this turns out to be a legitimate plan, the venue will get a serious upgrade.
On the other hand, if Elbo Room achieves “historic resource” status (the building’s owners are currently waiting for a verdict from the Historic Preservation Commission), it means no changes will be made to the space, and it will continue operation as it is.
In addition, reports of sound complaints have turned out to be false. “We have not heard anything negative from our neighbors,” which means only good things are to come from the venue. “There are so many awesome shows coming up.”
