Finally scientists are getting to the bottom of the real mysteries of life: how to get a girl’s number.
Well, at least one of them anyway: Nicolas Gueguen of France. Gueguen says he’s studied “courtship behavior” for a while now, carrying out hundreds of little tests that allowed him to deduce what works and doesn’t work statistically for men trying to date women. He got in touch with New York Magazine to share his findings, and well, it’s probably not exactly what you’d expect.
The top thing a man can do statistically is to make her laugh, with over 40% responding positively to a great sense of humor—not surprising—but the next most effective thing was to appear to be a musician. So, carry a guitar case and you’re apparently upping your chances of scoring a date.
Being sensitive and attractive also helped, though not as much as some might think—each alone works less than 25% of the time. Lastly, looking helpless doesn’t seem to be too effective.
Look funny: 43%
Be a musician: 31%
Look sensitive: 24%
Look hot: 22%
Look helpless: 15%
