SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The most audience-encompassing name in American professional sportscould potentially disappear forever once the Golden State Warriors cross the San Francisco Bay for the 2018-2019 season.

ESPN reports that team president and CEO Rick Welts is “very curious what our fans think” of the idea of renaming the team the San Francisco Warriors.

“I couldn’t imagine making that decision in the very near future, but we definitely want to see what our fans prefer,” Welts told ESPN.

The team was called the San Francisco Warriors from 1962 through 1971, back when the they called the Cow Palace home.

Team spokesman Nate Ballard told KPIX 5 that the change is no sure thing.

“We are still the Golden State Warriors,” said Ballard. “We are not actively considering a name change at this time, but it is obviously going to be a topic of discussion as we move to San Francisco.”
Earlier this week it was revealed that the team had purchased a 12 acre chunk of San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood with plans to build a new stadium, abandoning an earlier goal of opening an arena on the Embarcadero.
