You might have heard that music legend Sir Paul McCartney is coming to the Bay Area this year to perform the final concert at Candlestick Park on August 14th. Today’s announcement put to rest the rumors that McCartney was toying with the idea of playing at the new Levi Stadium in Santa Clara in lieu of Candlestick.
The concept of a show at the Stick was born when McCartney played last year’s Outside Lands reminded everyone of the Bay Area ties to the Beatles. McCartney and The Beatles performed their last paid gig at the Stick back on Aug. 29, 1966 with tickets running $4.50 to $6.50. Tickets for his August 14 “Farewell to Candlestick: The Final Concert” will surely be vastly more expensive but it is not very often one can see a rock legend at a venue slated for demolition.
What can you expect to hear for Sir Paul in San Francisco?
Judging from statements on his official site and samples of set-lists from his current world tour – expect the hits and then more hits. McCartney will play tracks off his latest recent studio album NEW but does not shy away from his illustrious past with Wings and The Beatles. For his three hour set McCarney will be backed by his band featuring Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums).
