Maria Hummel teaches writing at Stanford. Her new novel is Motherland, a story based on what she found out about her grandparents. They were German and, like many others, went along with Hitler during WWII. What were the circumstances? What were the choices made by average German citizens? What would the consequences be for those who did not go along and turn a blind eye?
Maria shares her memories of her grandparents and talks about the research she did for her novel.
