A Sliver of Light: Three Americans Imprisoned in Iran

In the summer of 2009, Americans Shane Bauer, Josh Fattal, and Sarah Shourd were having a little holiday in  Iraqi Kurdistan…lots of locals were camping there…no violence against Americans had been reported there in decades…a seemingly safe place…

They went for a hike and as they approached a ridge top where they were planning to turn around, a soldier signaled them to come to him…they thought he was Iraqi but as soon as they got to him they realized he was Iranian…and they were in big trouble.

Their unbelievable story unfolded in the headlines around the world but all the little day-to-day details were unknown until now. Bauer, Fattal, and Shourd have written a memoir together titled A Sliver of Light: Three Americans Imprisoned in Iran.

In my interview with them, they talk about the unmarked border, which is now very clearly marked, what the conditions were like inside Evin Prison in Tehran, how thier experience has shaped their current work, and how one of the men who originally captured them has contacted Shourd via Facebook…yes, he apologized…
