I’ve always loved End of Year Lists, so screw it … I’m making my own!
In no particular order, these are the five on-air moments that stood out the most for me in 2013:

Christina Perri flies to San Francisco to hear her new single “Human” on the air at Alice for the first time. Our friendship with CP is well-documented, God knows, and it’s ’cause it’s so real. She’s been true to the station ever since we were the first ones to play “Jar of Hearts” and now that she’s on #albumtwo, she wanted to celebrate release day of her new single “Human” by flying to the Bay Area to actually be in the Alice studios and hear it for the first time on the radio here in her “radio home.” The best. All of CBS San Francisco banded together to raise money for the Philippines’ typhoon relief effort. All of our radio stations, all of our TV stations, everyone – we worked the phone banks and called in to other peoples’ shows and did what we could to not feel so powerless in the wake of disaster. All day long on the air and on the phone we took donations and raised over $410,000, all thanks to the generosity of our listeners and viewers! Click here for pictures.

The day gay marriage became legal in California (again) and DOMA was struck down too. I was on pins and needles to hear the ruling, praying and checking every source of information on Earth every 5 seconds … and then the news came in! I cried happy tears into my phone, Sarah cried happy tears on the air, and our production genius Bennie put together a mix of “Same Love” using news clips from the day that we played on and off all day long. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps all over again.

The arrival of “Her”! The entire extended Alice family, staff and listeners, was waiting for the arrival of Vinnie and Dusty’s baby! As the texts from Vinnie came in I was reading his updates on the air (they were short but sweet – just something like “4cm”) but people were calling and asking, and I was posting constantly on all of our accounts after I was off the air too. And then, in the evening, we got a picture of a beautiful angel! Such an amazing day for all of the Alice Family. Listen to the “arrival” podcast.

#SFBatkid! One of the most fun days of my entire career. Sweet little Miles got rolling in the Batmobile right after I got on the air, and from that moment on I gave live updates of where our hero was and what he was up to, from saving Lou Seal to stopping for burgers and getting a standing ovation in the restaurant. It became very apparent very quickly that the whole world was watching San Francisco that day (the President tweeting him was a pretty big hint) and it was just amazing day to share with the whole Bay Area. Pictures from the day.
Keep up with Jayn (and her Batkid costume) on Facebook.
