Ella Yelich-O’Connor, aka Lorde, is sixteen going on seventeen, but she’s not some naive little kid. The New Zealand singer-songwriter has the maturity of someone twice her age, but with a fresh, honest appeal that can only come from someone who hasn’t lived long enough to be jaded.

It’s this unique combination that prompted DJ Booker at AMP Radio (a Radio.com station) to compare Lorde to ‘90s rock royalty, Alanis Morissette during an exclusive on-air interview in Los Angeles. The “Royals” singer took the comparison with a sense of pride, but laughed when the DJ mentioned other ‘90s artists like Hootie and the Blowfish and Stone Temple Pilots, both signed by Jason Flom, the same major label record exec who helped boost Lorde’s career in the United States. She claimed to have no idea who they were. Maybe because she was born in 1996.

“I listen to a lot of electronic music, a lot of hip-hop, just your standard pop music,” Lorde admitted, citing James Blake and HAIM as her must-see acts at the upcoming Laneway Festival in Australia where she’ll also be performing. “A bit of everything really. I love that new Miley [Cyrus] song…That and ‘Royals’ are really close on iTunes. It’s just so good, man.”
