Evan Wolfson is Founder and President of Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage nationwide. In 1983, Evan wrote his Harvard Law School thesis on gay people and the freedom to marry. During the 1990’s he served as co-counsel in the historic Hawaii marriage case that launched the ongoing global movement for the freedom to marry. His book, Why Marriage Matters: America, Equality, and Gay People’s Right to Marry, was published in July 2004. In 2012, Evan received the Barnard Medal of Distinction alongside President Barack Obama.
Evans talks about the recent Supreme Court decisions that struck down section 3 of DOMA and Prop 8. He explains the impact of DOMA and Prop 8 and what the Supreme Curt decision will do in the future.
When he started the effort to win marriage equality for all nationwide 30 years ago, he didn’t know he’d spend a large part of his career working towards that goal. Although the recent decisions are huge, the work of Freedom to Marry is not done. The organization’s new goal is achieving Freedom to Marry for all by 2016.
