Los Angeles based band Grouplove share a lot more than music. Each of the five members are branded in ink with the same tattoo.
In fact, the band urges fans to join in and get their own Grouplove tattoo, sometimes promising them perks when they do.
“Hannah was just talking about free shows for life,” Christian Zucconi said.
But with their fan base expanding she’s not so sure anymore.
“I’m reconsidering that,” Hannah Hooper admitted.
“Because we have seen quite a few of these tattoos now on Twitter,” Ryan Rabin added.
At many of their shows fans reveal where they got inked and Hannah confesses they’re in “awkward places.”
“I had a weird experience,” Sean Gadd said. “We were playing a festival and this girl was on the side stage before we went on and she called me over. I was like, ‘Hey, what’s up?’ and she literally pulled her pants down. I was like, ‘What are you doing?!’ and she’s like, ‘You have to check this out!’ She had a group tattoo with a heart right there (pointing to his leg). I don’t know what you call that area.”
“Right near her groin,” Christian jumped in before Sean continued his story.
“It was such a good tattoo I actually wanted to take a picture but it would have been really awkward,” he said.
Meanwhile, Hannah had her own tale to tell.
“What about the dude in Redding? He pulled his pants down and he had an infected tattoo,” she said. “It was so infected and it was on his thigh. It was really intense. I wanted to be like, ‘That’s awesome!’ but i was like “Ohhh!’ It was gnarly.”
So how did Grouplove come to get their own band tattoo?
“When we all got the tattoos it was the day Sean landed in America,” Christian said. “Our friend brought us to a tattoo shop and he knew the dude and he got us in late night and he got one on his party leg.”
The tattoos were free, but the tattoo artist wasn’t completely sold, so the band made a deal. Free tattoos in exchange for a Frank Sinatra painting.
“He was like, ‘I know you’re a painter. You have to give me a painting in exchange for the tattoos,’” Hannah said.
In addition to her music talents, turns out Hannah is “a crazy painter.”
Before she joined Grouplove, Hannah made a living painting. To see her work visit her website. Instead of painting and updating the work on her site, Hannah now spends her time on the road. Catch Grouplove on tour this fall at the below dates.
