Sorry Carrie Underwood, but there’s a new top Idol in town. The sales of Kelly Clarkson’s song, “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” just earned her the honor of best-selling single from an American Idol contestant, edging her past Underwood, the previous record holder.
Yesterday (July 4), Kelly officially became the top-selling Idol with “Stronger,” ousting Carrie and her 2006 hit, “Before He Cheats” from the number one spot, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Kelly’s power anthem has sold 3,510,000 copies since it’s 2011 release, narrowly beating Carrie by just a thousand copies. Jordin Sparks, who was the previous runner-up, now moves to the third slot with her 2008 single, “No Air” featuring Chris Brown.
The Original Idol is Lucky Magazine’s current cover girl and talked with the mag about redefining what pop music is with her “normal girl” persona and laid-back sense of style.
“The hardest thing about being in this business is just being able to be yourself,” Clarkson said. “People act like there’s this one set of rules to follow to be a pop star and I think, ‘Well, you say I’m a pop star, so maybe that’s not true.’”
Though Clarkson has earned herself the top-selling single, Carrie is still ahead in album sales with a little over 13 million sold. Kelly is a close second with 11,664,000.
Fans can catch her on tour this summer with The Fray starting on July 21 in Ridgefield, WA. Check out a full list of tour dates here.
