Billy Corgan is streaming what he calls “The best Smashing Pumpkins album in over fifteen years.” In an interview with WXRT’s Terri Hemmert Corgan explained his strategy for releasing his latest album. “I trust my fans,” states Corgan. “We’re going to put the music in their hands and they’re going to march out into the streets and they’re going to say that this is a worthy album or not.”

Sticking to his plans, Corgan wants fans to hit iTunes this week to preview Oceania in its entirety. If suitably impressed, he expects the previews to translate into sales when it’s made available for purchase on June 19th.

The Pumpkins worked in an empty movie theater in Sedona during the early winter of 2011 while drafting primary versions of the songs.

When Corgan was faced with the death of close friend Mark Tulin, bassist from the Electric Prunes, it forced him to re-think the over-arching theme of the Teargarden By Kaleidyscope concept, which contains Oceania. In an interview with Stereogum, Corgan outlined what happened, “It really, really shook me up and I can’t explain why. I mean he was a close friend, but it shook me up in a way I just couldn’t explain and something about it just led to this weird journey,” explains Corgan. “It took me on this weird journey of ‘What am I doing?’ and ‘Why am I even bothering anymore?’” He continues, “And that opened me up and a lot of the songs were figured out in the next six weeks.”
