Jason Mraz’s music has touched a lot of people, but none more than the singer himself who admits his own song stopped him from taking his own life.
In a clip from Mraz’s episode of VH1 Storytellers, which airs tonight (June 1), the singer gets emotional when he talks about his song, “I Won’t Give Up” off his most recent album, Love Is A Four Letter Word.
“I’ve had everything. I’ve had all my dreams come true. I was given a great gift, I was given a great community to share it, and I was given a great network of people to get it all around the world,” he said. “And yet, one still experiences melancholy.”
Wiping away a tear, the beanie clad singer continued to talk about his struggles with depression and confusion over not only his career, but his relationship with then fiancée Tristan Prettyman. The two ended their engagement last June.
To deal with all of these emotions, Mraz turned to music, something he’s always done.
“Songs are my best friend in time of need,” he said. “I can really speak to the paper and speak from stomach…forces s*** to come out of your mouth. It surprises me.”
After writing the personal song, Mraz wasn’t looking forward to performing it, but the single is now his mantra.
“I get to be here and still celebrate how awesome my life is,” Mraz said. “And share that with others.”
Along with the “I Won’t Give Up” confession, Mraz tweeted some other teasers for the upcoming episode:
