On his way to play the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, Belgian-born Australian-based performer Gotye stopped by the Alice@97.3 studios to talk about naked SNL cast members, Katy Perry, San Francisco tourist spots, and more.
With “Someone I Used To Know” scorching the charts, getting the Glee treatment, and racking up millions of YouTube views – it was no surprise that his recent Saturday Night Live appearance also featured a skit with Andy Samberg and Taran Killam doing a nude parody of the famous video. According to Gotye, the idea of the skit at first made him a little nervous – thinking he may embarrass himself – but he shook that off thinking, “What? What an idiot like this was going to come up as an opportunity ever again!”
When asked if the comedians we’re really “in the buff”, Gotye deflected, “I don’t remember … I wasn’t looking down there.” He jokingly added, “You can’t stay away from that man’s face [Adam Sandburg]. He keeps your gaze.”
On the topic of his own very revealing role in the “Someone I Used To Know” video, Gotye assured Jayn at Alice@97.3 that he was “wearing some underpants craftily chopped and gaffed taped to bits of me that you don’t see.”
The conversation then turned to Gotye’s recent pop success which the Belgian-Aussie commented that, “It wasn’t a world I expected to enter in any way,” but he was grateful for the love and support he’d received. On the subject of “pop”, he also revealed that his favorite Katy Perry song was “Teenage Dream”.
This being Gotye first trip the Bay Area, he also revealed he’s taken in one of the quintessential San Francisco tourist spots – Alcatraz.
“Amazing audio tour of the prison there. Really beautifully done. And the audio design is really nice too. You do get a sense of the clanking and scraping – this kind of murmuring of inmates.”
Would he sample “Alcatraz” for his next record?
“That’d be pretty amazing. I want to watch ‘Escape From Alcatraz’ with Clint Eastwood. I love that film.”
It really wasn’t a yes or no … so we’ll just have to wait and see if “The Rock” makes the cut.
