Country star Kenny Chesney wanted to duet with Lionel Richie so badly he drunk-dialed him at four in the morning. Poor Kenny was desperate to secure a place on Lionel’s “Tuskegee” duets project. More on the drunken phone call and the Lionel smash he wanted to team up for after the jump.
Lionel had this to say about Kenny’s call, the song, and even a little bit on Kenny’s mom:
“He calls me at four o’clock in the morning … and I was asleep and he left this voicemail: ‘Lionel, I love ‘My Love.’ I want ‘My Love.’ I love you, Lionel, I love you, I love you so much. … ‘My Love’ is my favorite song. I wanna sing ‘My Love’ with you.’
“He calls me later and goes, ‘I’m sorry Lionel, I drunk-dialed you.'”
But apparently the call worked because Kenny joined Lionel in the studio. He even brought his mom to the session.
Lionel explained, “He comes in the door … and he’s like, ‘Something amazing happened; my mother has never been to a recording session in my life, but my momma wanted to come down to see you.”
Lionel spent time with the Chesneys and insists they’re “the lovingest (sic) family I’ve ever met in my entire life.”
And the moral of the story is this:
Once in a while a good old-fashioned drunk-dial filled with declarations of love actually does the trick.
